South Korea have announced their final 26-man squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup. Coach Hong Myung-bo’s selection has produced a major surprise with young midfielder Jens Castrop making the list.

The 22-year-old midfielder, who plays for Borussia Mönchengladbach, had the opportunity to build his career with Germany but ultimately chose to represent his mother’s country, South Korea.

Born and raised in Germany, Castrop has a German father and a South Korean mother. He initially played for Germany’s youth national teams but changed his international allegiance last year. He made his debut for South Korea in a friendly match against the United States in September. Having already played five matches for the national team, he has impressed enough to earn a World Cup spot.

As expected, South Korea will be led by experienced forward Son Heung-min. The star, who has scored 54 goals for the national team, will be the focal point of Korea’s attack.

Alongside Son, the squad includes striker Oh Hyeon-gyu, who is in excellent form at Beşiktaş in Turkey, and experienced forward Cho Gue-sung.

The defence and midfield also feature major European-based stars. Bayern Munich defender Kim Min-jae and PSG midfielder Lee Kang-in are expected to be key players for Hong Myung-bo’s side.

Between the posts, goalkeeper Jo Hyeon-woo remains a trusted figure.

At the 2026 World Cup, South Korea will compete in a highly competitive Group A, where they will face hosts Mexico, strong side Czech Republic, and South Africa.

Having finished fourth in the 2002 World Cup, South Korea will now look to see how far they can go with Castrop and Son leading the charge.
