The football world witnessed a rare incident as Paraguay's experienced midfielder Miguel Almirón was shown a straight red card without committing a foul or dangerous tackle. Almirón became the first player to be sent off under a new FIFA regulation introduced for the 2026 World Cup after he was seen covering his mouth while speaking to an opposing player.
The incident occurred during first-half stoppage time in Paraguay's match against Turkey. While talking to Turkish defender Mert Müldür, Almirón covered his mouth with his hand. Referee Iván Barton of El Salvador immediately issued a straight red card, leaving players and spectators stunned. Although the decision initially appeared surprising, it was made under a recently implemented rule aimed at improving transparency and discipline on the field.
The regulation was largely inspired by a controversial UEFA Champions League incident in February. During a conversation with Real Madrid star Vinícius Júnior, Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni was seen covering his mouth. An investigation later concluded that Prestianni had made a homophobic remark, resulting in a six-match suspension.
Following that case, FIFA introduced a ban on players covering their mouths while speaking during matches, with the rule taking effect from the 2026 World Cup. The measure is intended to increase transparency in on-field communication and help combat discriminatory language in football.
