It’s rare to find someone who loves football but doesn’t know Zinedine Zidane. Undoubtedly, his name will always be among France’s greatest footballers. The World Cup–winning former midfielder’s son, Luca Zidane, has now decided to represent Algeria.

According to French outlet LÉquipe, FIFA has granted the 27-year-old goalkeeper permission to play for Algeria. Although born in Marseille, France, he also holds Algerian citizenship. His father Zidane is of Algerian descent, and his grandparents were Algerian as well.

Luca began his career at Real Madrid’s academy. He has played for Racing Santander, Rayo Vallecano, Eibar, and currently Granada. This season, he has already featured in four matches.

In 2018, Luca represented France’s U-20 side but was never called up to the senior national team. That’s why he has now chosen to wear the Algerian shirt.

However, securing a spot in the squad won’t be easy. He will have to compete with the likes of Mandrea, Guendouz, and Benbot.
Algeria will face Somalia and Uganda in the World Cup qualifiers this October, and in December they will take part in the Africa Cup of Nations.
